1. What is the MS Swimathon?

The MS Swimathon is a Queensland based fundraising initiative where teams are sponsored by friends, family and work colleagues to swim in a 12 hour relay; raising vital funds for Queenslanders living with multiple sclerosis (MS). You don’t need to be a ‘competitive’ swimmer to participate – people of all abilities can join in and take part. You can swim any style or distance that suits you; whether it be 1 or 100 laps in doggy paddle, freestyle, sidestroke, or breaststroke – it is all about participation! Nine MS Swimathon events are held across the state in Griffith Sport (Mt Gravatt), Jindalee, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Cairns and Townsville. So what are you waiting for….dive in, have fun and support people with MS!

2. How does it work?

Teams of at least 6 swimmers participate in a 12 hour swim relay – individual teams are responsible for creating a roster for their swimmers, so you can swim as many laps as you wish! But there are some rules; click here to view the MS Swimathon rules.

Creating a team is easy! Once you have registered yourself online, go into ‘create a team’ and register for your very own team web page…..you are now a Team Captain. You can use the team page to organise your team members, manage your team’s fundraising and acknowledge supporters who have donated to the team

Teams must have a minimum of 6 swimmers, and all team members must use the same 'team name' when registering – if you need help to set your team up, contact us – we are here to help!

10. When will entries close?

Online registrations will close at 5pm on the Thursday before the event. If you miss the deadline for online registrations you are still welcome to register on the day. Please note: If you register on the day you may not receive an official event t-shirt, as we need to order them in advance based on registration numbers at that time.

11. Can I still register on the day?

Yes, you can still register on the day however due to the growing popularity of this event - we recommend you register early to avoid disappointment.

12. I can’t find anyone to join my team - can I still participate?

Absolutely! If you would like to enter as an individual – we will find a team for you to join. Simply contact us, and we can discuss which teams may need additional members. Once you have registered please call us on 07 3840 0887 or email swimathon@mslqld.org.au to talk about your options. It could be a great way to meet some new friends or get involved with your local swimming club!

13. Do I have to be a good swimmer?

No, however you should be able to swim at least one lap of a pool unassisted. The MS Swimathon is a fun day where anyone can join in, no matter what their ability. Because you are swimming a relay with a team, some people will swim lots of laps, and others will only swim a few. There's no pressure to go at a particular speed or stroke; you can take it at your own pace and life guards will be on duty for the duration of the event. That being said, the MS Swimathon is a swimming event and so basic swimming ability is needed for your own safety.

14. I can't swim, however I want to help people with MS - what can I do?

It’s great to hear you want to show your support! If you can’t swim yourself you can always sponsor a swimmer/team participating in the MS Swimathon. You can even volunteer on the day, just call us on 07 3840 0887 to find out more.

15. Can I use floatation aids?

Yes. As from 2014/15 swimmers are permitted to use floatation devices and swimming aids (including fins/flippers, kick boards, noodles and wetsuits) except during the Hours of Power (unless approved by the Swimathon Director).

16. Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes – donations or sponsorships over $2.00 are fully tax deductible.

Sponsors who donate to your online fundraising page will automatically receive a tax deductible receipt via email once the transaction is complete. If you collect offline donations, we can provide you with receipt books. Just ask us to post some out to you.

17. Are there prizes?

Absolutely! We award your efforts in and out of the pool... click here to check out the prizes.

It may be that you only need to be there for an hour or two; however we suggest to arrive at the pool 15 minutes before you are rostered on to swim.

If conditions are deemed too hazardous by the MS Swimathon event team, a notification will be posted on our MS Swimathon Facebook page and we will send you an email/SMS.

If bad weather develops during the event, organisers will ensure the safety of the participants and decide if it is safe to continue.
