Chrissy Menzie

“Life is good” says the very positive Chrissy who has been fighting MS for 10 years.

Chrissy loves being a Nonna to all her wonderful grandchildren, but after being diagnosed with MS at the age of 49, she now suffers from fatigue amongst other MS symptoms.

This affects her ability to help out the grandchildren with their day to day activities and she misses out on taking them to the park.

I was so excited to be a Nonna to all my grandchildren, but they have never known me to be the active lady that I once was, instead they have spent their lives watching me struggle to walk.

My ‘dream’ was to lead an active life with my grandchildren.  But this dream faded when I was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago at 49.

I suffer from fatigue amongst my other MS symptoms and now I can’t even stay standing for more than five minutes….it’s so heartbreaking.

I had envisioned being able to take them to the park, picking them up from school and cooking for them.

Sherriff, my 7 year old grandson, has taken it upon himself to help my MS journey by taking part in the Townsville MS Swimathon every year. His goal was to raise $500, but so far he has raised $2,505 and the money is still coming in.

“I like helping Nonna and I wanted to do this to help her and all the other people who can’t walk properly” Sherriff tells me.

I could not be more proud of Sherriff’s efforts and I get teary every time I think about it.

My family and friends have been there every step of the way both mentally and physically, and for that I cannot thank them enough. But it is hard for them to relate to my MS changes and experiences….for that I turn to the MS Support Group here in Townsville.

The members of this support have become more than just other people living with MS, they have become my best friends.

People living with MS in regional areas such as Townsville require support from MS Queensland and it is only through taking part and fundraising in the Townsville MS Swimathon that they are able to provide more services to local people living with MS.

A big thank you to all of the other teams participating this year – you are doing a wonderful job and your support and commitment to fight MS will make a real difference.
