Kerry Evans

I would like to introduce Kerry: our Gladstone Community Champion.

Kerry lives a very busy life- sharing her time amongst her 6 grandchildren, volunteering as a Tai Chi instructor, looking after her dog, Sadie and also, keeping active. Despite all she does, Kerry has a daily struggle. Kerry lives with MS.

Kerry was diagnosed in 2002, at just 41 years old. She woke up one day experiencing blurriness in her left eye and numbness in her right thigh. It was only after seeking a second opinion from her GP, that Kerry was referred for an MRI that confirmed her MS diagnosis.

‘I remember feeling very shocked and scared.’

Kerry believes that MS has not stopped her from doing everything, however, it has impacted her life. Some days are a struggle, and it can be a real challenge to remain positive. Life is a balancing act.

Kerry has many quotes and mantras that she uses every day in her life. One of her favourites is a quote from J. M. Barry:

“Be Kinder than Necessary – For Everyone You Meet is Fighting Some Kind of Battle.”

MS Queensland has been with Kerry since the early days of her diagnosis, providing her with help, support and information. Kerry says her relationship with MS Queensland is “like having another friend that I know is there to talk to if I need.”

After participating in our Rockhampton MS Swimathon a few years ago, Kerry is extremely excited to welcome a MS Swimathon to Gladstone.

“The MS Swimathon promises to be a day full of fun and friendship, for all of those coming together to help Queenslanders living with MS.

You will have a great day and gain a real sense of satisfaction at the end of the day, knowing how much your help has been appreciated.”
